Back in April, we introduced UnaliCare Connect, a new feature designed to keep trusted family members informed during an emergency. Instead of wondering what was happening after a loved one requested help, designated contacts could receive text message updates as the emergency unfolded.
If you missed that announcement, you can read about it here: Stay Connected When It Matters Most.
Since then, many of our wearers and their families have enrolled in UnaliCare Connect, and we’ve received thoughtful feedback about what those updates have meant during real emergencies.
One story stood out.
(Names have been changed to protect our wearers’ privacy.)
“I Didn’t Have to Wonder.”
Linda lives about 45 minutes away from her father, Robert.
Like many families, they speak often, but they aren’t together every day. Robert enjoys living independently, tending his garden, meeting friends for breakfast, and taking walks through his neighborhood.
One afternoon, Linda’s phone vibrated.
“Emergency Services has been dispatched to Robert for an Emergency”
Her heart skipped a beat.
Seconds later, another message arrived.
“The emergency operator is calling you in reference to Robert”
She was naturally concerned, but she also knew something important:
Someone was already helping her dad.
The phone rang and she answered the call. The emergency operator gave her the details of what had happened, Robert was able to tell the operator he had fallen and couldn’t stand back up. He didn’t think he was injured, but first responders were already on the way.
She didn’t have to wonder if anyone knew.
She didn’t have to repeatedly call her father.
She didn’t have to imagine the worst.
She knew exactly what was happening.
Later, one final update appeared.
“The emergency operator has finished handling the alert for Robert.”
The operator called Linda back to let her know that Robert was OK, but was transported to the hospital to have him checked by a doctor.
Linda got the hospital information from the operator, and drove to see her father. Robert had gotten dizzy and experienced a fall while working in his yard. He was not injured, but he was dehydrated. After a few hours of cooling down and getting an IV, Linda was able to take him home. Thankfully, he received the assistance he needed, made a full recovery, and is back tending to his garden carrying his water bottle.
Looking back, Linda said something simple that stayed with us:
“I didn’t have to wonder.”
Why That Matters
When someone you love experiences an emergency, waiting for information can feel like the longest part of the experience.
Questions begin racing through your mind.
- Did they fall?
- Did they reach someone?
- Is help on the way?
- Are they okay?
Even if the emergency response is moving quickly, family members often have no way of knowing what’s happening.
UnaliCare Connect helps close that gap by providing timely updates throughout the emergency response, including notifications when:
- An emergency has been detected or help has been requested
- Emergency responders have been dispatched (when applicable)
- The emergency has been resolved
Those updates don’t eliminate the concern, but they replace uncertainty with information, and that can make an enormous difference.
Built for More Than the Wearer
From the beginning, our mission has been to help older adults live safely and independently.
But we also know that every wearer has people who care deeply about them.
A spouse.
An adult child.
A close friend.
A trusted neighbor.
UnaliCare Connect was created for them, too.
It helps keep the people who matter most informed, allowing them to focus on supporting their loved one instead of wondering what is happening behind the scenes.
Thank You
To everyone who has enrolled in UnaliCare Connect and shared feedback with us – thank you.
